Over the past decade, the M134D has evolved from being primarily an aerial weapon to one that is universally employed. High rate of fire and extreme target saturation allows for rapid engagement and suppression of threats at both short and long distances.

For these reasons, the M134D has rapidly become a standard defensive weapon system for ground forces. The Dillon Minigun is currently in use by numerous land forces in a wide variety of roles.
